Kazakhstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with a coastline along the Caspian Sea. As a result, the country has a fascinating maritime history, and its use of ships has been a source of both economic and technological development over the years. In recent times, however, the sale of ships in Kazakhstan has declined, due to a number of factors, including increasing competition from neighboring countries, as well as the global economic crisis.

In 2009, domestic sales of vessels in Kazakhstan totaled approximately USD 3.2 million. This was a significant decrease from the previous year, when the country had reported ship sales of USD 8.5 million. This decline was largely attributed to the global economic downturn, as well as increased competition from Russia, Ukraine, and other countries in the region. In the wake of the crisis, sales of vessels in Kazakhstan fell to their lowest level in nearly 20 years.

In the same year, there were also a number of significant developments in the country's shipbuilding industry. In 2009, Kazakhstan’s Astana Shipyard began construction on the first of three new vessels for the country's navy, as well as the Astana Shipyard and Dnepropetrovsk Shipyard both starting the construction of new vessels for the national merchant fleet. The two new shipyards had a significant impact on the sale of vessels in Kazakhstan; in the space of just a few years, the number of ships for sale in the country had doubled.

However, despite the surge in shipbuilding activity, it has not been enough to offset the decline in ship sales in Kazakhstan. In 2017, the country reported total vessel sales of just USD 2.5 million, a decline of more than 25 percent since 2009. This is due in part to the fact that the market is becoming increasingly competitive, as well as the fact that the demand for ships in Kazakhstan has decreased in recent years.

Overall, it is clear that the sale of ships in Kazakhstan has declined sharply in recent years, due mainly to the global economic crisis and rising competition in the region. However, the construction of new shipyards in the country, as well as the introduction of new vessels for the national merchant fleet, has helped to mitigate some of this decline. In the future, it remains to be seen whether the demand for ships in Kazakhstan will continue to decline, or whether the country will be able to turn the tide and reclaim its place as a major player in the maritime industry.
