The Role of Tankers in Global Trade

Tankers are massive ships specifically designed to transport large quantities of liquids, including crude oil, gasoline, diesel, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). With over 90% of the world's goods transported through the sea, the tanker industry plays a significant role in global trade. Although air cargo is faster, it's not as reliable or cost-effective as sea transportation. Tankers are essential for moving commodities from one geographic location to another. Here's how:

  1. Oil Transportation: One of the primary uses of tankers is to transport crude oil from oil-rich countries to oil refineries across the globe. These ships make it possible to transport oil over longer distances and to more parts of the world. Oil tankers vary in size and capacity, ranging from small vessels with a capacity of 50,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT) to ultra-large crude carriers (ULCCs) with a capacity of over 400,000 DWT.
  2. Gas Transportation: Tankers are also used for the transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). LNG is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, making it easier to transport by tanker. LPG, on the other hand, is a byproduct of the refining process and is used for heating and cooking in many parts of the world. Both of these commodities are transported in specially designed tankers that can withstand extreme cold temperatures and pressure.
  3. Chemical Transportation: Chemicals are another commodity transported by tankers. These ships transport various chemicals, including fertilizers, acids, and pesticides. Chemical tankers are designed to transport chemicals in their bulk liquid form, with a specific focus on safety as the chemicals being transported can be hazardous or toxic.
  4. Food Transportation: Food products such as vegetable oil and fruit juices are also transported by tankers. Food tankers are designed to transport liquid food products in bulk, and they have a set of unique requirements compared to other types of tankers. They need to have more complicated cleaning procedures to maintain hygiene as well as temperature controls and ventilation systems to regulate temperature and humidity.

Tanker industry has brought about numerous advantages in global trade. With the availability of petroleum and energy resources being limited in many countries, the use of tankers has enabled the transportation and distribution of these resources all over the globe. It has helped businesses boost their production, minimize their risks, and expand their market reach. While there may be controversies surrounding the ownership and control of tankers and the environmental impact they generate, there's no denying that tankers are a critical component of the global economy.
