The U.S. marine industry has seen a steady growth over the past decade. With more people investing in the marine industry, there has been an increase in the number of boats and ships available for sale in the United States. According to the most recent data from the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), in 2012, the total sales of vessels, including fishing vessels, cruisers, racing boats, yachts, and sailboats, were over 276,000. It's estimated that over 11,000 of these were sold in the commercial industry, with the remaining being for recreational purposes.

The largest markets for vessels in the U.S. are the Great Lakes and the coastal regions on the East and West coasts. Based on data from the NMMA, boat size distribution reflects the preferences of buyers. Boats between 25 and 40 feet long accounted for close to 85% of all 2012 boat sales. A majority of the boats sold in 2012 were used boatsโ€”close to 90%, compared to 10% of new vessels.

The trend in shipyards over the past decade has been towards boatbuilding specialization. Many shipyards have closed down, while others have merged or reorganized their operations. However, there is still an active market for vessels built in the U.S., as expressed by state boat documentation numbers. Over the past ten years, close to 40,000 vessels were documented in 2012 alone, representing a stable demand for marine vessels within the U.S.
